Case Study

A case study of the 2D animation I made for my second-year final major project, showcasing a short interaction between two of my original characters, a human and a hydra.

I will be walking you through my creative process throughout the different stages of production.

Pre-Production

Character 1

For this character I started with a silhouette drawing to work out the general shapes and vibes of the character.

Once I had a better idea of what I was working with, I began sketching out some concept art.

I built his design with triangles and sharp edges in mind to reflect his intelligence, and made his primary colours be red and yellow to represent his confidence and courage and bring some warmth into his design.

I then finalised his concept art with an expression and a turnaround sheet.

Character 2

This character I built with more smooth lines as I wanted there to be a contrast between this and the first character, while still keeping some of those sharp edges to show it is still a dangerous creature.

For the colour palette, I wanted the overall colour of the hydra to match with that of the water it would swim in while still maintaining some bright colours to make it recognisable which  is why I went with a mix of muted and saturated greens and blues.

Storyboarding

Production

For the production, I used procreate. I sketched out all my scenes, and made duplicates of them to do the line art in case something went wrong then I would have a backups. After finishing the line art I coloured in each frame and added the background.

Post-Production

For the music, I came up with something chill and simple that would fill the background.

Once I finished everything, I downloaded all of my scenes, music and sound effects and put them all into premiere pro to bring the final video together.
